The small coastal village of Rockport is home for two education and training centers: Rockport College and The Maine Photographic Workshops. The college is located on and is an integral part of the Workshops' campus. Here there is a facility for 250 students, faculty and support staff located in several buildings. which include a 20 classrooms, 18 darkroom with over 60 enlargers, a sound stage, a dozen Avid and Final Cut Pro editing suites, a library, 3 galleries, 2 studios, a book and supply store, student accommodations, a dining room, and a theater, all on spacious grounds. Students live and work within this small community, walking between classes, meals and functions.

The Village Center

Union Hall: Rockport's former town hall (built in 1852) contains a theater, photo studio and gallery, a custom photo lab, classrooms, a supply and book store, AV center and the school's registration and business offices.

The Homestead

This 1809 farm house contains student accommodations, classrooms, and the kitchen. Adjacent is the outdoor dining area and indoor dining room.

The Ernst Haas Photographic Center

The Ernst Haas Photographic Center contains the library, an extensive photo lab with 8 private darkrooms and a 16-enlarger gang darkroom. The center also features a conference room, seminar room and two classrooms.

The Library

There are three major collections in the library: The Kate Carter Library, the Ernst Haas Library and the Ralph Rosenblum collection of film books and film scripts. The Library is linked to the Internet, providing access to all of Maine's libraries through a sharing network.

The Film Sound Stage

The film sound stage is a 2,400-square-foot space for film and video productions and class work.

The Ralph Rosenblum Film Production Center

The Ralph Rosenblum Film Production Center houses the Film Production Office and the Camera & Lighting Department and the Avid and Final Cut Pro Training Labs, with a total of 10 state-of-the-art workstations for completing student projects..

The New Imaging Center

This four-story building houses two Digital Media Labs with 20 iMac workstations, two classrooms, the campus dining room, and a large darkroom lab with 7 private darkroom, two gang darkroom and 34 enlargers.

This 30-bedroom hotel also contains three classrooms, a conference room, lounge and student laundry facility.

The Marshall Farm & Kate's Cottage

The Marshall Farm is a late 1800's farmhouse providing on-campus accommodations for students. Kate's Cottage is a Victorian cottage with on-campus accommodations.

Labs, Studios & Facilities

Rockport College has all the necessary audio visual systems for effective teaching, including slide, film, video and digital and overhead projectors, video playback systems, a master work slide collection, copy center and training materials for various classes.

Photography Facilities

Over the years, The Workshops has built a training facility for photographers, filmmakers and digital imaging artists which is one of the largest in New England. Designed to accommodate The Workshops popular summer workshop classes, the facilities include over 60 enlargers in 18 darkroom. Darkroom contain all the necessary equipment to process film and make enlargements. Facilities for non-silver, historic printing processes are also available. The studio includes view cameras and lenses, strobe lighting systems, backdrops, props and grip equipment, table tops and soft boxes.

Film & Video Production Facilities

Rockport College has available more than $1,000,000 worth of film and video production equipment - owned or on-loan from the major manufacturers who sponsor the instructional programs. The camera department has 10 Canon mini-Digital video camera packages, two Sony Betacams, an Arriflex 16-SR-II plus an Arri 16-BL and Arri S film camera packages.

Digital Imaging Training Facilities

Rockport College is firmly committed to the digital revolution by adding a second digital lab this summer, along with brand new workstations and two large format Epson printers to the Digital Service Bureau. The Digital Labs are each equipped with brand new G5 Macintosh workstations, Wacom tablets, card readers, CD burners, and are networked to the Digital Service Bureau.

Our Digital Service Bureau

The College has a fully equipped Digital Service Bureau with the latest Fujifilm NC1000 professional printers and 2750 and 5000 Finescan scanners plus Epson 2200 ink-jet printers. Prints can be made in a variety of sizes. High resolution film scanning and exhibition quality prints can also be made.

Digital Photo Classrooms and Labs

All classrooms are equipped with digital projectors and an instructor's Macintosh laptop for screening student and faculty digital images.

Interested in trying out a high-end digital camera? The Workshops and College are sponsored by Canon and Olympus. We have Canon D10 and Olympus E-1 cameras for students to work with.
