The Program
This one-year program is an excellent preparation for entry into a graduate program, or as a practical alternative to graduate school or for those who want to develop their photography for personal reasons. The Professional Certificate Program provides complete and in-depth training in the craft of photographic imagmaking while helping participants develop their personal vision as they explore career options. The curriculum and structure have been refined over the past 25 years, and includes lectures, demonstrations, research, reading, field work, lab work and weekly critiques. The faculty includes respected teachers and professional imagemakers assisted by a knowledgeable and supportive staff. The facilities are extensive and the community of creative people promotes learning, risk and exploration.
The 15-week fall program covers the
fundamentals of technical, theoretical and artistic training, as
well as a study of history, philosophy and career opportunities.
The time spent at Rockport College affords residents the time to
complete a body of personal work while finding new direction in
their personal vision and professional careers. The spring term
provides choices of career pathways via electives in various aspects
of professional photography, craft and technology.
The Rockport College educational program
in photography offers as intensive or complete training in the craft
of the medium. Students can choose either a traditional wet darkroom or digital photography track. If you are considering returning to graduate school
you should first look into the Rockport College Certificate Program.
You should plan to visit the college for a portfolio review and
interview with a faculty member.

Who Should Attend
This program is for people who have already made a commitment to photography and who want to master the craft, develop their eye and advance their career. This is an excellent program for recent college graduates seeking more in-depth technical and visual training, professionals in other fields wishing to change careers, and as a practical alternative to (or in preparation for) graduate school. A portfolio review is required for acceptance.
Semester-in-Rockport. If you
are presently attending college and want to spend the fall term
or a full academic year at Rockport College, other schools often
accept credit for this program.
Fall Term: The B & W Foundation Program.
This 15-week program is a comprehensive
course covering the artistic, technical and practical aspects of
advanced B & W photography. Courses include work with the Zone
System, metering, film emulsions, chemistry, camera handling, darkroom
procedures and print presentation, as well as historical and philosophical
issues. Students may choose either a traditional or digital darkroom track.
You will develop your own vision through
practical shooting assignments exploring various subjects: the landscape,
interiors, portraits, still lifes, social issues and personal images
- acquiring practical experience as you develop your personal portfolio.
The fall 15 weeks is a complete program and may be taken as a course
unto itself.
The comprehensive program includes courses in the artistic, technical and practical aspects of advanced B & W photography.

Spring Term: The Career Foundation Program.
The Spring 15-week term allows students
to tailor their own curriculum to suite their personal and career
goals. Students assemble a variety of electives to make up the required
18 credits for graduation. Courses include Color Vision and Theory,
Digital Printing, Alternative Photographic Processes, Studio and
Location Lighting, the View Camera, fine art or documentary projects.
The term culminates with the production of a final portfolio and
exhibition of student work.
Additional career options are available,
with advisors's permission, through summer workshops.
Spring Term Electives. The program provides more tailored curricula to fit each student's own career direction. Combine the electives below with the required courses above to complete the 18 credits for the term.
