The Program

This one-year Multimedia Program is for individuals wanting to work professionally as a multimedia creator/producer, combining elements of photography, film and video, digital media and sound to create presentations for print publication, theatrical, the Internet, and DVD release. Application is by portfolio. Applicants must show evidence of a basic understanding of visual art, photography and computer literacy and a career direction.

Career Opportunities

This 30-week program is designed to prepare you technically, artistically, creatively and professionally for a career in media creation and production. The curriculum covers the technical tools and techniques, methodology and workflow, professional attitude and career planning to succeed as a multimedia producer, agency creative director, project manager, editor, web master or content provider. The thrust of the program is on the creation of content: design, format, and project management, and the use of computer technology. A foundation in digital and traditional tools, software applications and digital systems is inherent in the curriculum. Graduates leave with a career plan and professional direction, portfolio reel, knowledge of the market and career options to work freelance, or in small teams or studios with other creative professionals.

The Future of Multimedia

Digital technologies have opened a whole new world of publication, entertainment and art-making possibilities and opportunities. The new tools, combined with the more traditional technologies are shaping how we communicate, how we see the world and how we share our observations, thoughts and stories.

Rockport College offers a new and continually evolving, inter-disciplinary curriculum for visual and new media art professionals, designers and storytellers. Multimedia producers today and tomorrow combine knowledge of and experienced with photography, film and video production, graphic design, website design, DVD authoring, installations, project management, workflow, and traditional and emerging publishing opportunities.

Program Structure

Throughout the year, multimedia students work solo, and collaboratively in small teams, to create media projects, while learning workflow, client relations, teamwork and the integration of various technologies into their creative work. Students select from a wide range of available electives in photography, film, video, graphic design and digital media to tailor their own curriculum to support their artistic interests and career direction. The fall term provides technical training in various software applications, workstation configuration, digital workflow, hardware and methodology. Core courses explore concept development, project management, photography and video production. Digital workflow, image sourcing and editing, scripting, graphic design and storyboarding, project budgeting and final output are covered in course work and Project class. The Project class develops the student’s creative storytelling skills as each student begins to assemble elements for their professional reel. Projects include real-world assignments for local non-profits, artists, craft associations and fellow students. Courses in media history and market trends provide a context for future professional and personal work. A course in Professional Development, along with on-going counseling, coaching and advise on careers, prepares each student as they launch their career as a creative professionals and content creators. Projects are reviewed regularly and critiqued weekly.

Technology Requirements

Students in the Multimedia track are required to come with their own digital SLR camera and laptop compatible with the school’s network and a hard-drive back-up system. The campus is MAC supported; please inquire during application process for specifics. Rockport ‘s campus is wireless, with access to a central server and technical support through the Campus IT Office.

Certificate Requirements

Each student is to have completed at least 36 credits to qualify for the Professional Certificate. Selection of courses is with advice and consent of a faculty member.
