MFA Program Format Options
You may choose one of two approaches, or combine aspects of both. Both options are self-designed creative programs as opposed to academic or research in orientation.
- On-Campus Residency Program
- Off-Campus, Low Residency Program
On-Campus Residency Program
This program is for those wishing to complete their MFA Program in as little as two years. This option is especially practical for those contemplating teaching as a career as Teaching Assistantships may be available on competitive bases. Non-teaching Assistantships may also available. Courses are available on campus each Fall and Spring Term which may be taken for graduate credit. Independent study projects may be taken with members of the faculty.
Candidates may also elect to take Summer Workshops and undertake longer mentored projects. Candidates may work with their advisors to structure their On-Campus Residence experience to ensure that the required credits are earned in as little as two years. A maximum of 12 credits may be earned in any one 3-month (Rockport College) term, in combinations with assistantships, mentored projects and course work. From 6 to 9 credits will be the norm.
Off-Campus Program
This option is for those unable to spend a long period in residence in Rockport. Off-campus Candidates are made up of full-time teachers, media professionals, and people with family and job responsibilities who wish to continue their education and creative growth but are unable to attend a graduate program full-time. Candidates in the off-campus program are required to spend a minimum of two, two-week or one four-week periods (1 credit per week) in residency in Rockport or at one of The Workshops' off-campus centers working with a resident faculty member on a project. Candidates work with their advisors to structure their alternate campus residency experience to ensure that the required credits are earned.
The Weekend Retreats
Candidates are required to attend five consecutive weekend retreats for credit to present their work before their peers, resident and guest faculty and the MFA Committee. New applicants also present their portfolios at these retreats. Retreats provide a focus for each Candidate's mentored projects, along with a critique and evaluation of the work and the candidate’s art-making process. Guest faculty may be invited to provide inspiration and insight. Retreats are a time for renewal of friendships, discussion and debate contributing to an concentrated atmosphere of encouragement and education. Retreats are held in Rockport in May and November. Acceptance to the MFA Program is by vote of the MFA Committee members and current Candidates.
